A veces no valoramos el arte nacional. Me emociona reencontrarme con las molas, me identifico por que es de mi país, las he visto desde que nací y no deja de impresionarme el detalle y el cuidado con que cada una está hecha.

Conocí a Marbelia, trabaja enfrente de mi oficina, tiene un puesto donde vende molas y pulseritas y le pregunté si me podía ayudar con una versión de hongo Mushmellow en mola. Fue muy emocionante, me dijo "Tráeme el dibujo" y el resto fue arte de ella. El día que fui a buscar las molas y las vi dije "WAO!", las amé!! Dónde están? En algunas clutch, algunas carteras grandes y otras están por ver dónde y cómo las uso según me inspire.

Sometimes we take for granted our national art. It's exciting for me to rediscover molas, I've seen them since I was born, I feel connected because they're from my country and it's always impressing to see the care and details in each one.

I met Marbelia, she works in front of my office, she has a stand where she sells molas and wristbands and I asked her if she could help me do a mola version of the Mushmellow mushroom. It was very exciting, she told me to bring her a drawing and that was it, the rest was her own art. The day I went to pick them up I said "WAO!" when I saw them. Where are they now? In some clutches, some handbags and others are waiting for inspiration to see where I'll put them so they completely stand out.

Este año volví a la Feria de Artesanías de ATLAPA. Esta vez, acompañada de 2 amigas/colegas especiales del mundo del handmade: Maika de Sweet and More y Elvia de Uchuu Koneko Accesorios. Fue divertido tener compañía, comparar notas de heridas de combate mientras haces lo que haces.

Lo malo: La seguridad deja mucho que desear, se robaron mi celular y el guardia dijo que la cámara no llegaba a nuestro stand.

Lo bueno: Amistad, gente felicitando por lo que hacemos y porque somos Panameñas y las fresas con crema de la gente de Chiriquí! yummy

I went back to the fair Feria de Artesanías de ATLAPA this year. This time, I wasn't alone, two friends from the handmade world joined me and we shared space: Maika from Sweet and More and Elvia from Uchuu Koneko Accesorios. It was fun to have company and to compare how injured you can get while doing what we do.

Downside: Security wasn't near good, someone stole my cellphone and the security guard said that the cameras couldn't reach our stand.

Highlight: Friendship, people saying lovely things about our work and because we're Panamanians and of course the delicious strawberries with cream from the Chiriquí people, yummy!

Finalmente vencí el miedo (bueno, en verdad Pablo me ladilló jaja) hasta que me inscribí en la Feria de Artesanías de ATLAPA. Que si tenía culillo? por supuesto! Los años anteriores mi mamá ha dicho "pobrecitos algunos que tienen la mesa llena porque no vendieron mucho". Cuando estás ahí todo pasa como por oleadas. Un momento estás solo, no hay nadie, de repente viene un montón de gente a preguntar pero nadie compra, de repente todo el mundo compra al mismo tiempo y de repente estás solo de nuevo. El clásico estrés es "van a querer comprar?". Descubrí que el que quiere algo no pone peros y lo compra. Fue una experiencia increíble. Primero coordinar el stand, conseguir las cosas, corriendo para poder tenerlo listo, y sobrevivir 5 días.

Las mejores anécdotas son de las personas que me compraron. Mi compradora más pequeña fue una niña como de 5 años que quería un anillo de botones. Por suerte eran ajustables pero lo tuve que achicar tanto que me dio miedo de que se dañara, al final todo bien, le quedó perfecto, ella enseño su manito a sus abuelas y todas se fueron felices. Otro día llegó una pareja de extranjeros super buena gente, la chica se iba con una cartera hasta que vio que otra señora estaba mirando otra que le había gustado. Entonces compró las 2 jaja. Otra chica vino por un bolso que vio pero fue a recorrer los otros puestos primero, cuando regresó ya la habían comprado y se fue triste. Al rato llega el esposo y le compró una para llevarle de sorpresa y me dice "si no le gusta la puedo cambiar por otra?", le dije que por supuesto que sí. Nunca volvió, parece que le gustó! y así hay más historias.

El comentario más lindo? "Que Dios bendiga tus manos, qué bonito trabajo haces". El último día no sabía cómo pararme o sentarme pero todo valió la pena. Conocí un montón de gente y Mushmellow salio al público y fue recibida con brazos abiertos!

So I finally conquered fear (well the truth is Pablo pushed me hehe), and I signed up for the biggest crafts fair in Panama, Feria de Artesanías at ATLAPA. Was I scared? absolutely! My mom always says when we go to a fair "poor people, look at their tables still full of stuff because sales aren't good". When you're there, everything changes by the minute, you're alone, then you're sorrounded by people asking about you're products but no one's buying, then everyone's buying, then you're alone again, it's really funny. The classic fear is wether people are gonna like your stuff, will they buy? I found out that when someone really wants something, they don't ask too much, they just get it. It was an incredible experience. First getting the stand ready, then sewing like crazy and then surviving 5 days of madness.

The best stories are from the people who bought something. My youngest customer was a 5 year old girl who wanted a button ring. Good thing I was able to adjust the size to her tiny finger, I was scared I was gonna break the ring. So, she smiled, showed her hand to her grandmothers and everyone left happy. Then I met a foreign couple, the girl was taking one bag until she saw a lady inspecting another one she liked, then she decided to take both! After that another woman came asking for a bag she saw earlier but someone else bought. She left a little sad, and her husband came back, bought one for her and asked me if he could change it in case she didn't like it. He never came back, so I think she must have loved it. And I have more stories like that.

The most beautiful comment of all "may God bless your hands for the beautiful work you do". The last day I didn't know how to sit or stand or anything, but it was worth it. I met a lot of amazing people and Mushmellow went public and was received with open arms!

Hechas con música

Cada cartera Mushmellow es hecha con lo mejor de mi y el ingrediente secreto es...música! Amo la música y no puedo pensar en cómo sería el mundo sin ella. Me gusta pensar que cada cosa que hago tiene una historia distinta y dependiendo de la canción que toque (me gusta poner shuffle songs) voy imaginando mientras coso. Divertido, ah? Algunas que recuerdo: Una cartera de vaca hecha escuchando Placebo, algunas de fieltro con Florence + the Machine y terminé una anoche escuchando White Lies. Qué hay en tu playlist?

Each Mushmellow bag is made with the best of me and the secret ingredient is...music! I love music and I just can't imagine what the world would be like without it. I like to think that everything I do has a unique story behind and depending of what song is playing (I like to set my playlist to shuffle songs) I imagine while I'm sewing. Fun, huh? Some I remember: A cow bag made while listening Placebo, some felt ones made listening to Florence + the Machine and I finished one last night to the tunes of White Lies. What's in your playlist?

Primera Feria

El hongo tuvo su primera feria y fue mansa experiencia. Primero, tratar de coordinar todo a la par de mi trabajo, cosiendo por las noches, estrés de no encontrar lo que quería para mi mesa y bueno, aparecen mis ángeles guardianes desbocados Pablo e Iriana. Amé mi mesa!

Muchas cosas pasan por la cabeza, estrés de tener todo listo a tiempo y luego pensar si a la gente le va a gustar. Gracias Dios! Muchos comentarios positivos y las piezas con botones fueron un hit. Ya no soy "feria virgin" jaja. Ahora vienen más! Atentos para fin de mes, del 28 de julio al 1 de agosto en la Feria de Artesanías de ATLAPA, el hongo strikes back!

The mushroom had it's 1st craft fair and it was an amazing experience. First, trying to coordinate everything while attending my full time job, sewing at nights, stand decorating stress, but luckily my 2 superb guardian angels Pablo and Iriana did an incredible job with everything, I really loved my stand.

So many things are going through your head when you're there, stress trying to have everything set and then you start thinking if people are going to like what you do. Thank God! lots of positive feedback and the button pieces were a hit. I'm no longer a "fair virgin" hehe =) Now there's more on the way! Be ready for Feria de Artesanías at ATLAPA, from july 28 to august 1st, the mushroom strikes back!

Mi amigo Luis Eduardo Guillén fue el encargado de esta hermosa tarea, fuimos al Parque Metropolitano y fue un domingo de naturaleza, calor, mosquitos, sed y...buenas fotos! Me encantan...

Mushmellow is evolving and now we're working with vinyl + fabrics + anything that looks cool. Next step: photos! My friend Luis Eduardo Guillén was in charge of this beautiful task, we went to Parque Metropolitano and spent one Sunday morning surrounded by nature, heat, mosquitoes, thirst and...great pictures! I love them...

Mush-bags

Carteras...por qué carteras?
1. Soy adicta
2. Las amo
3. Soy diseñadora y un día me dije, no debe ser tan difícil y fue mi reto personal, hacer una cartera. No fue tan fácil pero me encantó el reto y una cosa llevó a la otra y aquí estoy, haciendo carteras.
4. Puedo canalizar todos los "no" de mis clientes jajja, porque aquí hago lo que quiero, yo no me voy a decir a mi que no jeaameasss (como diría Laura)

Empecé con patrones que compré y ahí entendí la lógica de todo. Trato de verlo como diseñadora gráfica cuando armo un dummy, en vez de papel, aquí uso tela, en vez de pegar con goma, coso con hilo y así. Hoy día es divertido decir que las formas de mis carteras son hechas por mi y todos los días se me ocurre algo diferente. Ahora, hay que decirle al hamster de mi cerebro que deje de correr en la ruedita!

Handbags...why handbags?
1. I'm an addict
2. I love them
3. I'm a designer and one day I told myself it can't be that hard, so it became my personal challenge, me vs. me. It wasn't that easy, but I loved it and one thing led to another and here I am, making handbags!
4. I can channel the energy of every NO my clients say to my designs at work hehe. Here I do whatever I want and trust me, I'm not going to say no to myself (lol)

I started with some patterns I bought, trying to understand everything. I try to compare it with my design work when I'm making a dummy, instead of paper I have to use fabric, instead of glue I have to sew it. Today, I'm proud to say that I made my own patterns and everyday I think of something new, now we have to tell my brain to relax a little!

Hongo evolution

Como diseñadora que soy, me gusta rayar dibujitos mientras estoy pensando. De repente esos dibujitos se convirtieron en hongos. Sí, hongos! Empecé a dibujar hongos por todos lados al mismo tiempo que descubrí el mundo de las manualidades, coincidencia? Mmmm, no creo. Como dos nuevos amigos que se conocieron... hongo, te presento a manualidades... manualidades, este es hongo...y zas! se cayeron tan bien que ahora se hacen llamar Mushmellow.

As every graphic designer, I love doodling while I'm thinking. Suddenly, my doodles became mushrooms. Yes, mushrooms! I started drawing mushrooms everywhere, at the same time I was discovering the handcrafting world, coincidence? Mmmm, I don't think so. As two new friends that meet...mushroom, I present you handcrafts...handcrafts, this is mushroom...and bam! they hit it off so well that now they call themselves Mushmellow.

I found this ecourse like magic, just at the right time of my life to give myself a kick in the butt and remind me that I have lots of ideas stored in my brain that deserve to go out to the world and be known! It's too good and I could think of it as custom made for me because it's really casual, inspiring with lots of tips and facts about the internet world and my creative job, like it!

I can't believe it's been more than a year since I last posted something here. I guess I got a little confused about what I wanted to do with this blog. But I never thought I would abandone it! Sorry blog!

I've done a lot of stuff this year. I kept doing handbags (whenever I have the time), designed my own bag pattern and also started experimenting stuff with felt and vinyl, I'll take pictures! This is a mousepad I got at IKEA, love that store. It was blank so I felt the impulse to draw something and this is the final result, I'm loving it!

Frenchy Bag

I just finished my first handbag! I got the frenchy bag pattern (very friendly by the way) and stayed up late 2 nights in a row to finish the project, so I'm a little sleepy but proud =) My favorite part? choosing fabrics! Mission 1 accomplished! Yayy!

I have a gigantic crush, I must confess! In my personal search for new ways to challenge my design abilities, I've kind of fallen for fabrics. I'm sewing a lot lately and I can spend hours searching for cool fabrics to use on my stuff, there's so many to choose from, I love it. So, I started wondering how cool it would be if I could use my own designs. It's not an easy task, you need a lot of pattern design background, but it's not impossible, I'm trying! Here's a few examples of what I've done, basically playing with random shapes, flowers and mushrooms of course.

I absolutely love dogs, they're just the cutest things, don't you just love puppy paws? Well, not everything about them is lovely, dog's droppings just don't fit in the "awww, how cute" category. I found a really surprising post at NOTCOT and I just have to share it. The agency Junge Schachtel has done a really remarkable job...out of their passion for dogs and design, they came up with this amazing poo poo bags. The packaging looks really beautiful and modern, each package comes with 16 recyclable bags and you can choose from a variety of humorous prints. Applause for them!

People, we are responsible for our actions and how they affect the world around us. We wake up everyday thinking only about our lives, we don't look further. There are so many serious issues today like global warming and luckily for us, some are taking action.

We are what we do is a movement created to inspire people to use their everyday actions to change the world. They began in the United Kingdom, as a project of the charity Community Links. Raul is a very good friend of mine and I've always admired his talent for illustration. We worked together for about a year and his talent is too much to be stucked doing newspaper ads or pop material, although he did some interesting eewok stuff =). I'm into modern interior decoration, and lately I've been seeing a lot of cool things wondering where they are coming from. Well, it's all about the fabric. I found out that most of the things I like are from Marimekko (leading Finnish textile and clothing design company) and entered their website and nearly died. I just took a deep long breath and thought "I wanna do this". I don't know much about pattern or textile design but I'm really into it and learning. StolenShirts came up with the idea of designing these StatAttak t-shirts after being shocked by statistics of "Life expectancy at Birth" in various nations in Africa. Andorra was the highest with 83.51 years and Mozambique was at the bottom with 31.1 years. C'mon! I'm 31, it is shocking! The intention is to make people aware of this stats. The Sons of Stolen are putting 20% of the sales to building an orphanage in Mozambique. Great design by the way.

Experiments

I'm in DIY mode, I decided I should learn how to sew and started with make-up bags. To my surprise, they look like make-up bags, they're pretty good actually, so...yaaay! I don't suck! =) It's really fun, specially when you start experimenting, for example, I designed 1" buttons to personalize them with my friend's name and some random designs.

I came up with a pretty case for my iPod touch made with felt and fabric, and did some more for friends, oh! and a camera pouch.

They're funny, happy and they seem to be everywhere! It's weird (in a good way) because I noticed one day that most of my doodles were mushrooms, and that inspired MUSHMELLOW, so I pay a closer look whenever and wherever I see them. Here's a few pictures of what I found, from felt projects to fabric design, they always look cool and let's not forget Mario Bros. super mushroom!

I'm Melissa, a graphic designer working at an ad agency in Panama. Things get kind of blurry after a few years in the business, you end up designing for your client, not for your self, and sometimes you look at your work and hate it, but, that's just the way it is, you get used to it.
A few months ago, I discovered a blog by accident and my life has changed ever since. I've always thought that working for an ad agency has it's deadline, and I was worried about not having a Plan B, well now I might have a B, C & D plan. I want to thank decor8 for inspiring me an opening my eyes to a new world of beautiful design.
I still have my work but I discovered new ways to still love and be proud of what I do with new projects. This blog is created to share my sources of inspiration and projects. Hope you like it!
